Windows 10 explorer keeps crashing?

Windows explorer is one of the most used and preferred application on Windows 10 that gives you a large variety of services. But often, you may have encountered errors that it might be having and thus hampering the performance of the computer. But, do not worry at all, because we have listed a few methods, by which you can deal with it easily. So, follow the steps given below-

1. Keep your windows up to date

Sometimes, the problem arises when the windows is not updated and may cause such problems in Windows Explorer. So, to avoid this, you can try the following steps-

  1. Press Win+ I keys at the same time to open Settings and then select Update & Security.
  2. Choose Windows Update and then click Check for updates on the right panel.
  3. If the updates are available, windows will start to download them automatically. After downloading the updates successfully, restart your computer to perform the installation process.

Now, see if the problem still persists, if it is, then follow the next step.

2. Disable thumbnails

Sometimes, the thumbnails in the computer cause this problem, and the windows 10 explorers often crash, so to avoid the issue, follow the steps given below-

  1. Type control panel in the Search bar and then click Control Panel.
  2. Set View by: Large icons and then click File Explorer Options.
  3. Go to the View tab and then check Always show icons, never thumbnails. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

3. Clear file explorer history

By clearing the file explorer history, you can get rid of the problem. To deal with the issue, follow the steps given below-

  1. Open File Explorer Options and then go to the General
  2. Click Clear in the Privacy Then File Explorer history will be cleared in seconds.

4. Launch folder windows in a separate process

All the files explorers and the windows explorer are there in the computer by default. So, you need to launch a new folder if the windows explorer is crashed. To deal with the issue, follow the steps given below-

  1. Open File Explorer Options and then go to the View
  2. Check Launch folder windows in a separate process and then click Apply and OK to save changes.

5. Run CHKDSK and SFC Scans

Perform a hard disk check

You can also try this step to deal with the issue. To do this, follow the steps given below-

  1. Type cmd in the Search box and then right-click Command Prompt to choose Run as administrator. Click Yes.
  2. Type chkdsk /f /rin the window and then press Enter.
  3. Press Ykey to confirm that you want to run a hard disk check when the system starts the next time and Enter  Then exit the command line window.

After following the command, you need to restart your computer and get rid of the issue.

Perform a system file check

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Step 2: Type sfc /scannow in the window and then press Enter.

Then wait for a few minutes in order for the windows to detect the damaged files in the computer, the windows in such situation, deals with them automatically. Restart your computer and see if the issue still exists.

6. Make changes to Graphics card driver

Sometimes the outdated graphics card driver causes this problem. To get rid of the problem, follow the steps given below-

  1. Press Win + X keys at the same time to choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters in the newly pop-out window, then right-click your graphics card to choose Uninstall device.
  3. Check Delete the driver software for this device and then click Uninstall.
  4. Reboot your computer, your system will automatically reinstall your graphics card.
  5. If Windows doesn’t reinstall your graphics card driver, then you should visit your graphics card manufacturer’s website to download the latest driver for your device.
  6. Open Device Manager again, click Action on the top to choose Scan for hardware changes.

After going through all the steps, restart your computer to see if the issue still exists.

7. Check installed add-ons

Sometimes, the installed add-ons create problem which cause the crash in the windows explorer. Though, these add-ons are super convenient, but they might cause problem to the windows explorer.

Check installed add-ons and see if they are causing any issue or not, If they are try disabling them to get rid of the issue.

8. Run Netsh Winsock reset

You can even try launching Netsh Winsock reset to get rid of the issue. To do this, follow the steps given below-

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Type netsh winsock reset in the window and then press Enter.
  3. Restart your computer and then check if Windows 10 Explorer keeps crashing.
  4. Check account permission

You can even check account permission to get rid of the issue.

  1. Open File Explorer, then right-click the folder you want to make changes to choose Properties.
  2. Go to the Security tab and then choose Advanced.
  3. Click Change next to Owner, and then input administrator (your user account) in the box under the Enter the object name to select  Click Check Names to make sure that the name is right. Click OK to exit Select User or Group and then click OK to save changes.
  4. In the User Properties window, go to the Security tab and then click Edit… to change permissions.
  5. In the Permission for Administratorssection, check to Allow for Full Control, and then click OK to save changes.
  6. Disable quick access and set open file explorer to this PC

Also, you can disable quick access and get rid of the issue. To do this, follow the steps given below-

  1. Open File Explorer Options and then go to the General
  2. Set Open File Explorer to This PC instead of Quick access.
  3. Uncheck both Show recently used files in Quick access and Show frequently used folders in Quick access under the Privacy Clicks apply and OK to save changes.
