How To Stop Automatic Updates On Windows 10?

1. Disable windows update service

The first solution that you can look for is to disable windows update service. To do this, you have to follow the steps given below-

Step 1- Open Service window

  1. Press Windows key and R key together to open the Run 
  2. Type msc in the box.
  3. Click OK or hit Enter to continue.

Step 2- Disable Windows update service

  1. In the services window, please find out the Windows Update service and double-click it.
  2. In the popup window, change the Startup type to Disabled. Then change the Service status to Stop.
  3. Click Apply and OK to execute the changes.

After completing all the steps, the next thing that you need to do is to restart your computer and you problem will be solved.

2. Change the group policy

By changing the group policy also, you can stop the automatic update of Windows 10. To do this, you need to follow the steps given below-

Step 1- Open the local group policy editor

  1. Press Windows key and R key together to open Run dialog, and type  msc.
  2. Click OK to continue.

Step 2- Find out the configure automatic updates

  1. In the left penal of the Local group policy editor window, you have to go to Windows update for this; you need to follow the steps- Computer Configuration > Administrator Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
  2. Then choose Configure Automatic Updates in the right panel and double-click it.

Step 3- Configure automatic updates

  1. In the popup window, choose Enabledto continue.
  2. Then choose Notify for download and auto install from the drop-down menu in the Configure automatic updating section.
  3. Click OKto continue.

When all the steps are successfully completed, restart your computer and you will not see any automatic update in the computer.

3. Change the registry to stop windows update

You can also try to disable or change the registry to stop windows update. This is quite risky, so you can backup your important files so that they are not damaged.

To change the registry, do as aforesaid-

Step 1- Open the registry editor

  1. Press Windows key and R key together to open the Run 
  2. Type regedit in the box and click OK to continue.

Step 2- Find out windows folder

Navigate the windows folder, by following the path-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Step 3- Create the new AU key

  1. Right-click Windows key and choose New, and choose Key to continue.
  2. Press Enter to continue.
  3. Name the new key as AU.

Step 4- Create the AUOptions

  1. Select the newly create AU key and right-click the right blank area to choose New to continue.
  2. Choose DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  3. Name it as the AUOptions and press Enter to continue.

Step 5- Change value

  1. Double-click the newly created AUOptions.
  2. In the popup window, change its value data from 0 to 2.
  3. Click OKto continue.

After completing all the steps, restart your computer and get resolved from the issue.

4. Disable windows update tasks

You can even disable windows update tasks, so that the automatic update of the windows does not happen. To do this, follow the steps given below-

Step 1- Find out windows update in Task Scheduler

  1. Type Task Scheduler in Windows search box and choose the best-matched one.
  2. Open the Task Scheduler to enter its main interface.
  3. Navigate to the WindowsUpdatefolder according to the path: Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > WindowsUpdate.

Step 2- Disable windows update

  1. Right-click the Scheduled Start which is in the right panel
  2. Then choose Disable to continue.

You can restart your computer, to get done away with the problem of automatic update.

5. Meter Network connection

You can even try to meter your network connection so that the problem of automatic update is solved. To do this, follow the steps given below-

Step 1- Select the network and internet

  1. Right-click Start button of Windows 10 and select Settings to continue.
  2. In the popup window, choose Network & Internet.

Step 2- Meter your network connection

  1. In the popup window, choose Status from the left pane to continue.
  2. Next, select Change Connection Properties.
  3. Then turn on Set as metered connection under Metered connection 

6. Pause windows update for 35 days

You can temporarily pause windows update for 35 days and solve the problem of automatic update. To do this, follow the steps given below-

Step 1- Open update and security

  1. Right-click Start button of Windows 10 and click Settings to continue.
  2. In the popup window, choose Update & Security to continue.

Step 2- Pause windows update for 35 days

  1. In the popup window, please locate at the Windows Update in the left pane and choose Advanced Options in the right pane to continue.
  2. In the popup window, please locate at the Pause Updates section and turn on the button.

7. Restore Windows 10 to previous version

You can even try this method to get rid of the problem. You can restore windows 10 to previous version but before that backup all the important files and documents.
