The Reason Behind Smartphones’ Popularity Among Teenagers

A study titled “The Digital Lives of Generation Z”, carried out by Ericsson two years ago drew a startling picture. The study, specifically targeting Generation Z, which alludes to young adults born between the years 1994 and 2004, and even younger age groups of 9-11 years, showed that around half of the teenagers and pre-teens in the country’s urban areas now own a smartphone. Furthermore, the study also revealed that about 30 million teenagers out of 69 million in the urban areas own a smartphone, with 20 percent of them being pre-teens (11 years of younger).

This not only highlights the smartphone penetration in the country, but also emphasizes on how young adults and pre-teens now have greater access to smartphones than ever before. A report by Nasscom, analysing the mobile gaming industry in India in 2018 speculated that the Indian mobile gaming market would reach 628 million users by 2020, and would be worth around US $1.1 billion. With 2.8 billion game downloads in the first half of 2018 by the Indian mobile gamers, India also stood first among the emerging markets in terms of mobile game downloads, which underlines the importance of catering to the mobile gaming market.

Phone brands are now developing gaming-centric smartphones, targeting the hardcore mobile gamers. While smartphones are now replacing traditional gaming consoles, there is a huge demand for smartphones with better GPUs, which offer optimal gaming experience.

2.   Social Media Presence

One of the more recent terms making rounds on social media is the word “clout”, which refers to someone’s influence or power. Clout, when it comes to social media, refers to social media influencers, and how they can ‘influence’ their followers or their fan groups. With almost every smartphone user now having a YouTube channel, or accounts on social media applications like Instagram and Twitter, it is now possible to have access to millions of social media users from around the world.

Brands have quickly realized the importance of having social media influencers on board, and teenagers, who have good social media following are now being recruited by brands to advertise their products. This could be on Instagram as a promotional post, or as ads on someone’s YouTube video. In 2019, there were around 290 million active social media users in India, who mainly accessed social networks through their smartphones. Furthermore, the main contributors were the millennials and Generation Z, with 52.3 percent of social media conversations coming from millennials, and 28.4 percent from Generation Z.

3.   Availability of Budget-Friendly Phones

One of the main reasons for smartphones becoming ubiquitous, is their availability at pocket-friendly prices. With the entry of brands like Xiaomi and Realme in the Indian market, there has been a significant change in the mindset of the average Indian consumer. Smartphones now come equipped with top-of-the-line features, better camera quality, high-speed RAM and larger storage space at affordable rates, which were previously made available by premium brands such as Apple and Samsung at premium prices.
